Trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon

First Performance: The Avenue Winds, July 28 2006, San Francisco Chamber Wind Festival, USA

Trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon was commissioned by Lyle Dockendorff in June of 2004, however, the performance in San Francisco was the premiere with blessings from Lyle.

The character of the opening section of the Trio is light, whimsical and virtuosic. The second section is slower, more lyrical and features the bassoon. I love impressionistic music and am tipping the hat to Maurice Ravel in this section. The opening section returns with the clarinet tune inverted. The whimiscal character is abetted by rhythimic elements which work their way into the recapitulation and distort the music slightly. After a pause there is a coda based on the opening material.
